About us
Welcome to The Preventative Health Journal. We are passionate about preventative health practices and how they can improve your life. We aim to provide information to help ordinary people learn how to sustain a healthy lifestyle and prevent themselves from falling victim to serious illnesses, such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease. It is our belief that prevention is indeed often better than cure.
Our news articles are the perfect source for health practitioners to keep in touch and up to date with the most innovative practices and new thinking. The Preventative Health Journal is a premier source for news, information and discussion focussed on preventative health.
Our mission:
The Preventative Health Journal provides information, stories and an online community for people to learn about and discuss preventative health practices that help real people achieve healthier lifestyles and avoid sicknesses and disease.
We provide regular news, features, videos, blogs, discussions and practitioner profiles from both the science community and the alternative medicine community, effectively uniting the practices from both Eastern and Western cultures. Many experts believe that these schools of thought work best when used in combination.
Our coverage is presented in a well-researched, easy to digest format and our stories are based on hard facts. Where we can, we strive to make these stories entertaining too. Many of the people who practice these preventative health techniques are very interesting and the success stories are often colourful too.
Some of the Eastern medicines we report on include acupuncture, massage, reiki, yoga and Tai Chi. The Western ideas we explore include scientific research funded by the Government, biochemistry, nanotechnology and stem cell research.
As well as spreading awareness about all of these different practices and their health benefits for ordinary people, we also want to help people change the way they think about health. In the East, the emphasis is on prevention, whereas the West focuses more on treatment after a person has become ill. We would like to help persuade Western societies that more resources and support needs to be invested in practices and ideas that can sustain a healthier lifestyle and prevent people becoming ill.

Rodney Appleyard - Publisher
After suffering chronic back pain for a year, Rodney turned to the practices of acupuncture and massage to help heal the pain and prevent him from suffering from the aches again. Along the way, he learnt all about preventative health from his practitioners, which inspired him to set up this website.
Rodney has a degree in Broadcast Journalism and has written for a number of newspapers, magazines and websites. He has been a journalist for the last 11 years, including a few years at the BBC, where he spent time working on the health and education websites.
He went on to join Channel 4 and helped set up up the channel’s film website as the Deputy Editor, which involved interviewing some of the most interesting actors and directors in the world.
Since then, he has worked for a number of Australian magazines and websites, including launching (as Editor) Australia’s only Special Effects magazine in 2005. He has also written for a leading Australian medical website called MedicalSearch and has contributed stories regularly to The Big Issue. Additionally, he wrote for IndustrySearch, which provides a powerful directory for companies involved in a wide variety of interesting industries.
Rodney has always wanted to put his journalism to good use in the world and help others to help themselves. His main hope for this website is that it will be able educate many people about how they can avoid becoming ill through making sensible lifestyle choices and working closely with a wide variety of health practitioners.
