With fall rapidly approaching (in the Northern hemisphere) it seems likely that this year’s flu season has the potential to be devastating should the H1N1 virus become more virulent and combine with seasonal flu.  It’s been almost 90 or so years since the Spanish flu of 1918 which killed 50-100 million people, but are we more prepared this time.  There is talk of a vaccine being prepared but is this going to be enough, will enough people get it?

We covered swine flu earlier this year but now that the dust has settled it seems like a good time to informally start a discussion with our readers about their thoughts on this years flu’ season.  What do you think?  Are you confident or worried about the future, what are you doing to remain healthy through the fall and winter?

The good news: In North America, this 2009 flu season does seem to be a bit milder. In Europe they are suffering through the worst flu season in a decade, according to Bloomberg News.

The bad news: Tamiflu, the one drug that has been used to help patients get over the flu isn’t working as well as it should this year.

Unfortunately, depending on your community, some of the 2009 flu bugs are about 99% resistant to Tamiflu, and therefore taking the drug won’t help, according to the New York Times and the CDC.

The bad news for N.America is that unless they break convention and use adjuvants the US might not have enough vaccine for everyone.  Adjuvants are non FDA approved and some claim that they are linked to Gulf War syndrome (http://www.infowars.com/swine-flu-scare-its-all-about-the-adjuvant/), although in other parts of the world adjuvants are cleared for public use.

What worries me is that even without adjuvants the vaccine has been rushed through and who knows how it will really effect people.  In the 1976 flu scare (http://www.capitalcentury.com/1976.html) the outbreak was fairly limited the vaccinations given to the general public caused more damage than the virus, and they did not vaccinate anywhere near the numbers that are intended this fall.
