Existing health care falling short
Good health is about thriving; not just surviving says Dr Martin Harvey. Dr Harvey says much of today’s healthcare is focused on treatment of symptoms when equal priority should be given to whole body wellbeing through pro-active consideration of health and lifestyle issues.
He said that while prevention in health care was a noble goal we should be aiming beyond that. “Your body’s health affects everything you do. The benefits for individuals in a high state of health are that they have far more energy, are less prone to common illnesses and are generally happier and more in control of their lives,” Dr Harvey said.
Chiropractors believe a healthy spine means a healthy nervous system and that means a healthier human being! When your spine is healthy your nervous system can function at its optimal level giving your body the opportunity to thrive.
Dr Harvey recently received the International Chiropractor of the Year Award at the recent Parker Seminar in the United States. Parker Las Vegas is the world’s pre-eminent Chiropractic event, and every year it bestows several major awards with the highest individual accolade being International Chiropractor of the Year.
The Australian Spinal Research Foundation, with Dr Harvey as its current President, has been generating impressive research for a number of years and was acknowledged for its outstanding contribution to chiropractic through achieving the International Leadership Award for Research.
“Our research is aimed at understanding how chiropractic care may give a better quality of life for people so they are happier, healthier and thrive, not just survive,” said Dr Harvey.
Current research studies relate to:
- Whether chiropractic care for pregnant women may help the delivery process by improving the function of pelvic floor muscles.
- How chiropractic care may lead to long lasting changes in the ability of the brain to work efficiently
- How falls in the elderly, the leading cause of injury related deaths in this population, can be reduced through chiropractic care.
Dr Harvey says: “It is ironic that we tend to think of thriving when it comes to relationships or money but not with our health.”
