– The Penn-CHOP Center for Kidney Innovation will foster collaboration between institutions and seek to transform patient care through a collaborative approach to precision medicine –
PhiladelphiaAnd the August 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ – In an effort to improve the lives of children and adults with kidney disease, Children’s Hospital Philadelphia (CHOP) and Penn Medicine jointly launch Penn-CHOP Kidney Innovation Center. The first-of-its-kind center will advance research to transform the care of patients of all ages, focusing on early detection, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease and its complications.
“More than 850 million people suffer from kidney disease, and kidney disease is one of the fastest growing causes of death, so there is an urgent need to accelerate progress in our understanding and treatment of the condition,” said the co-director. Katalin SostakMD, PhD, professor of nephrology and genetics at Perelman College of Medicine in University of Pennsylvania. “This center will bring in experts from both institutions, using interdisciplinary collaboration as a driving force to accelerate research that improves the health and well-being of all kidney patients.”
The center will focus on three main areas: Promoting cutting-edge discoveries through collaboration between The son of and CHOP. Recruit and develop outstanding talent in key areas that align with the center’s mission; and building the next generation of nephrology researchers through an enhanced training and mentorship program.
“By bringing both pediatric and adult kidney researchers together under one umbrella, we will accelerate the pace of discovery for both groups,” said the co-director. Michael DenburgMD, MSCE, director of research for the division of nephrology at CHOP and associate professor of pediatrics and epidemiology at CHOP. The son of. “Some kidney disease processes are common to adults and children, and others are unique, but either way, enhancing crosstalk between researchers can shed light on disease mechanisms for both children and adults and lead to accurate diagnoses and treatments.”
The Kidney Innovation Center brings together scientists in clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, computational biology, genetics, pathology, physiology, biochemistry, immunology, genomics, pharmacology, psychology, and education. The researchers will take a bench-to-bed, big data approach, investigating the molecular pathways, genetics, and biochemistry associated with kidney disease and identifying targets for potential treatments.
The center will promote a culture of collaboration and discovery among researchers at CHOP, The son of, and beyond by hosting an annual renal life cycle research symposium, as well as regular meetings, journal clubs and shared resources. You will also work on developing local talent through training in the latest research methods and administering the Experimental Grants Programme.
