Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Wesley Fofana from Leicester on a seven-year contract. The 21-year-old defender moved to £75m and raised the club’s summer spending to more than £250m.
He is the third player to sign for £50m or more, after Raheem Sterling and Mark Cucurella. Chelsea are also willing to commit another £75m or so Josko Gvardiol Insurance from RB Leipzig on the understanding that he will end this season with the German club and join in June.
Leicester opened talks with Atalanta Winger Jeremy Boga and they are quick to sign contracts with the money they have earned for Fofana. Leicester’s only signing was free reserve goalkeeper Alex Smithies, but they line up with Reims and Out Weiss as a replacement for Fovana in the center of defense and push into Boga.
Boga, the French-born Ivory Coast player, came through the Chelsea academy but only appeared once in the Premier League before joining Sassuolo and then Atalanta. He had a season in the Championship with Birmingham on loan from Chelsea and is keen to join Leicester.
Brighton are trying to sign Billy Gilmore from Chelsea on a permanent deal, but he could be scrapped due to the London club’s midfield injury list. Gilmore is not in Thomas Tuchel’s plans and was expected to leave on loan or on a long-term move. Brighton will wait to see if Chelsea feel they can afford to lose another midfielder.
The lack of bodies led to Gilmore, who spent last season in Norwich, being included in the squad for the first time under Tuchel when Chelsea lost to Southampton on Tuesday. N’Golo Kante has been out for several weeks and Trivoh Chalobah, who can play in defense or in the middle, was not fit either. To exacerbate Tuchel’s problems, Ruben Loftus-Cheek was replaced in the first half by Mateo Kovacic, who is in short supply after suffering a hamstring injury. Conor Gallagher was absent due to suspension. Although Gilmore has not come off the bench, Chelsea are reluctant to penalize the move until they are sure he will not be wanted in the coming weeks.
Any move to Brighton has to be permanent because The Seagulls have one Chelsea player, defender Levi Colwell, on loan. That has not deterred the club from trying to close a deal and revive the career of the player who broke into the scene under Frank Lampard in the 2019-20 season and is also impressive internationally with Scotland.
Chelsea and Gilmore have other options, as many clubs are keen to get a loan. OlympiaKos is among those who have registered their interest.
Everton are the favorites to sign for Manchester United Midfielder James Garner, who has drawn bids from four clubs, after they secured a bid of £15m. The 21-year-old has taken loans at Watford and Nottingham Forest. Everton are also hoping to seal a deal to re-sign midfielder Idrissa Jouy from Paris Saint-Germain.
Sunderland is in advanced talks with United over loaning Emad Diallo. The club of the tournament has taken midfielder Edouard Michot on loan from Paris Saint-Germain with an option to buy for €5m (£4.3m).
Southampton concludes a deal to sign Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan with an option to buy after reaching an agreement with Manchester City to sign teenagers Sam Iduzi and Juan Larios. The city will have items for repurchase.
