Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 Hands-on Review

The 2022 ThinkPad X1 Fold is the second generation of Lenovo’s foldable line, which the company says is now bigger, more powerful, and more versatile.

After launching the foldable PC category in 2020 with Original ThinkPad X1 FoldLenovo has taken what it learned from the first generation to make a simpler, more modern product that appeals to a wider audience. After spending some time with the ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 myself, I came away impressed with how Lenovo has moved the design forward.

The ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 is a complex device with many moving parts, no pun intended. There’s a lot to consider in terms of its design – the 16.3-inch screen itself – its exterior, interior and accessories.

Customers had to purchase original ThinkPad X1 Fold accessories, such as keyboard and paper holder, separately. This model is sold with a magnetic attachable keyboard and kickstand. When not in use, you can fold the ThinkPad X1 Fold into its 12-inch shape and place both accessories on your computer for easy portability without the need for an additional bag.

The ThinkPad X1 Fold’s two outer layers are made of woven fabric panels reinforced with carbon fiber and graphite. Internally, the computer features a fanless design but incorporates a graphite-copper heat sink as its own cooling system to spread heat to protect the machine’s most important components.

The hinge has a concealed design so that the two plates wrap around it when the device is opened and closed. Lenovo explained that when folded, the design creates a bell shape for the screen that never completely wrinkles the screen, but rather helps protect it from damage.

The stellar feature of the ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 is definitely its screen, a 16.3-inch display with a resolution of 2024 x 2560, a foldable OLED display with 600 nits of brightness in HDR mode and 400 nits of brightness in SDR mode, plus a DCI P3 100% RGB color space.

The on-cell touchscreen also supports Dolby Vision and Pen support, with the Wacom stylus as its tool of choice. The accessory snaps magnetically to the side of the chassis for easy portability. The grated speakers on either side of the frame also support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Voice.

The sheer size of the product allows you to imagine it more often as a basic tablet and much more as planned – a foldable computer with many possibilities to set up and use it. At first glance, OLED colors really come out, as would be expected from this type of panel. In addition to the basic 16.3-inch and 12-inch form factors, the ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 can be integrated into various positions with or without stand and trackpad attachments.

When unfolded, you can use the 2022 ThinkPad X1 Fold in portrait or landscape mode, with the screen automatically adjusting to fit different orientations. Portrait mode is the new option, which basically gives you a tall, vertical view. This is also something of this laptop’s primary competitor, which is Asus ZenBook Fold 17She does not have.

Then you can fold the new ThinkPad X1 Fold into a clamshell position, which allows it to be used as a traditional laptop. The foldable panel features an on-screen keyboard, of course, although a plug-in accessory keyboard is what most people want to use.

The foldable computer includes a 5MP IR RGB front camera, which supports built-in AI features such as, lock on departure and wake up on the face. As described, the device can be set to lock automatically when the camera does not detect eyes and wake up again when you are on the screen again. Like the old model, this foldable computer also sticks to a single camera.

You can also switch the view to set up multiple panels, columns, or areas to bring up different browsers, apps, or programs. This is a great option for multitasking and can be configured in a number of unique configurations. You probably need a productivity side-by-side use case that’s perfect for landscape mode. You can make columns in vertical position and split one column in half, adjust the size as you need. There are so many possibilities.

Lenovo has also made improvements to the first-generation ThinkPad X1 Fold, which has a folding gap, by ensuring that the 2022 model folds perfectly. Not only does this provide a smooth look when viewing the screen, but it helps create narrow screen edges.

There is some stumbling along the foldable point of the screen, but I can’t imagine this hindering the look or performance of the screen in any way. It’s just something I noticed. It could be the result of a hidden hinge, as described earlier.

Lenovo claims that the durability of a foldable display exceeds the life of a PC, predicting that the display can last up to 10 years, according to results of robust open and closed fold tests on the product.

Keyboard and trackpad

The 2022 ThinkPad X1 Fold accessories now come with the foldable PC and are lightweight and magnetically mountable. The ThinkPad TrackPoint Bluetooth Keyboard is a full-size peripheral device modeled on ThinkPad X1 Nano keyboard. It includes trackpoint buttons, a touch trackpad, and a fingerprint reader that supports Windows Hello.

When not already connected, you can use the keyboard separately from the screen while connected to Bluetooth. In addition, you can place the keyboard on top of the flat portion of the foldable computer in clamshell mode, or continue to use the attached keyboard, or separately.

Likewise, the stand that comes with the 2022 ThinkPad X1 Fold magnetically snaps and adjusts well for ease of use. You can place the device in landscape or portrait mode and adjust the fold to your preference.

Fortunately, several issues with the layout of the original ThinkPad X1 Fold keyboard have been resolved. No missing keys or surprises – everything is just right where you’d expect it on a standard ThinkPad laptop. Thanks in large part to the larger size, you no longer need to compromise to fit all switches.

Performance and battery life

With its professional in-house features, Lenovo promises significant performance improvements with the 2022 ThinkPad X1 Fold over the previous model based on its own internal testing. The foldable PC offers options for up to 12th Gen Intel Core U9 vPro i5 and i7 processors, up to 32GB of LPDDR5 memory, a PCIe Gen 4 SSD up to 1TB, and Intel Iris Xe Graphics.

Several configurable options are available on Lenovo.com, including five processor options for i5, i7 vPro, and non-vPro, and storage options including 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. In addition, the device comes with Windows 11 Home, and it can be upgraded to Windows 11 Pro or downgraded to Windows 10 Pro based on user preferences.

The device also comes with a standard 48Wh battery, which can be configured to add an additional 16Wh battery. Together, Lenovo promises up to 11 hours of battery life for the 2022 ThinkPad X1 Fold, which is up to three hours according to previous model reviews.

Additionally, the device includes a nano-SIM card tray for LTE connectivity. It also comes with Wi-Fi 6E support standard and optional 5G Sub 6 support.
