Today Mariah Carey broke her silence over the embarrassing moment the Duchess of Sussex was called a “singer” in her podcast – and insisted she meant it in the most “cool, wonderful and empowering” sense of the word.
The shocked Meghan said the poster the pop star addressed to her while they were chatting on the podcast made her “sweat” and “stooped her in her tracks”.
In an audio commentary at the end of Meghan’s second archetypes episode, which was published by Spotify on Tuesday, the Duchess said the comment made her worried about the ‘nonsense’ Carrey might have read about her.
On Friday, Carey tweeted about what she meant when she called Meghan a singer, as well as posting a link to the podcast.
I really enjoyed talking to the Duchess and Diva Meghan Markle about the ‘diva duo’. yes! I called her a singer, in the most amazing, wonderful and empowering sense of the word!!! #Archetypes,” she wrote.
Mariah Carey has doubled down on describing Meghan Markle as ‘the singer’, insisting she meant it in a free way.
The 53-year-old appeared on the second episode of the Originals podcast on Spotify when the Duchess, 41, told the Duchess, “The singer’s moments give us Meghan sometimes.”
Curry has already retweeted a Spotify Podcasts tweet linked to the episode.
Titled The Diva’s Duo with Mariah Carey, the episode explores the complexities surrounding ‘the singer’ and the negative connotations associated with the word.
In an audio commentary, Meghan mentions the singers’ outlandish demands associated with Carrie – including reported requests for 20 white cats and 100 white pigeons when she turned on the Christmas lights in London – but doesn’t appear to have questioned the singer about them.
Megan laughs and says, ‘Maybe you read about the time she supposedly ordered 20 white cats and 100 pigeons in London? I don’t know.’
During the 46-minute episode, Carey told the former Suits actress: “You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan. Don’t act like…” With a panicked Duchess responding and laughing in surprise: “What kind of singer moments do I give you?” “
Speaking at the end of the podcast, Meghan said: ‘Everything was going smoothly, I mean really well, until that moment happened, which I don’t know about you, but it stopped me in my tracks when she called me a singer. “
Meghan added: “You can’t see me, of course, but I’m starting to sweat a little. I began to shiver in my seat at this quiet revolution. Like waiting. What? no what? How did you manage? this is not true. why would you say that?
“My mind was honestly circling about this bullshit that she must have read or clicked to get her to say it.”
The shocked Meghan started ‘sweating’ and ‘stopping her in her tracks’, when she was labeled a ‘singer’, yet Mariah has since insisted she means no harm.

The Duchess said Carey was quick to reassure her and that she meant the label was “chic” and “aspirational”.
‘She must have felt my nervous laugh and you’ll hear it all too,’ Megan said, and jumped in to make sure I was perfectly clear.
When a singer said, she was talking about the way I dress, the way I dress, and how awesome she sees.
She meant the singer as a compliment. I heard him as a digger. I heard it as a diva as I think of it, but at that moment, as she explained to me, she meant it was elegant and ambitious.
In the exchange, the couple discussed the concept of a singer, with Meghan saying: “It’s really important for people to remember that there might be this character, this singer that we can play as. It’s not something I would call it but for you, it was a huge part.
Carrie replies: “You give us diva moments sometimes, Megan. Don’t act like…”

The former Suits star said she was inspired by the singer as a child because Mariah is of mixed race. Maria’s father is African American and Venezuelan, while her mother is white Irish.
The Duchess, whose estranged father Thomas is white and mother Doria is black, said that when Maria first appeared on the musical stage, she thought: ‘Oh my God.’ someone like me. She’s mixed like me, adding that she was a “girl fan” of the star.
She added: ‘Because we are light-skinned, you are not treated like a black woman. You are not treated as a white woman. You kind of fit in between.
If there was ever a time there was a greater focus on my ethnicity, I started dating my husband. Then I started to understand what it was like to be treated like a black woman because until then I was treated like a mixed woman and things really changed.”
“But that’s an interesting thing, a mixed woman,” replied Maria, “because I’ve always thought it good to say I’m mixed, as I should say it, but people want you to choose.”
At the start of the podcast, Mariah said to Megan, “I’m the MC, you can call me Mimi, you can call me Maria, whatever you want.” The Duchess began the conversation by asking the name of Carrie’s dogs – Cha Cha and Motley B Gore Jackson.
Last Tuesday, Meghan used the first episode of The Originals with Serena to take a veiled swipe at life in the royal family. She also spoke of her horror at the time a “fire” broke out in her son Archie’s room during a tour of South Africa.

She told her friend that the four-month-old was not in the room by the time the heater started smoking, but left the Duchess “shaking” and “crying”. Although upset, she said she was forced to continue the couple’s official engagements.
The launch of the podcast came a day after the duchess gave a controversial interview with The Cut in which she said she had made an “active effort” to forgive the royal family, warning “particularly knowing I can say anything”.
She also said she was told there was the same jubilation in South Africa when she married Harry as when Nelson Mandela was released from prison.
