“So nice to be back in the UK and so nice to be back with you all at One Young World.
“As you will probably hear many times this week, you will hear all sorts of things: some very heavy, some very uplifting, but the resounding spirit, I think you will hear, is that you are the future. But I may add to that that you are also the present.
“You are the ones driving the positive and necessary change that is needed around the world right now at this very moment and for that, I am so grateful to be in your company today.
“Several years ago in 2014, I was first called upon to be a consultant at One Young World, and in many ways at the time, I was probably a lot like each of you: young, ambitious, advocate for the things I love deeply and deeply believe.
As you look around and wonder, ‘How on earth did I get here? Have any of you had that feeling today, that ‘pinch me’ moment, where you’re like, ‘How am I here?’ And at that dinner, there were 28 to 30 of us, counselors, and there was this girl from Suits and I was surrounded by world leaders, And humanitarian workers, prime ministers and activists for whom I had deep and long-standing respect and admiration.I was invited to take a seat at the table.
“I was overwhelmed by this experience, and I think I even kept my little paper place card with my name written on it – just proof and proof of my being there and proof of my belonging.
“Because the truth is, I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I was so nervous. I doubted myself and wondered, I wondered if I was good enough to be there—what in the world I was doing, though as important and meaningful as I saw, was it worth sitting on this table?
“But One Young World saw in me what I wanted to see completely in myself. They saw in me, just as I see it in you, the present and the future. And I repeat this point because often when we talk to young people about the coming years, about what you will do, what You have to adopt it to fix it from previous generations and also the legacy you are going to leave, but so often we ignore the point you are doing now.You are here in this moment, this is where it all started.
“The first year I joined the delegation in Dublin, I worked with a young woman from Eritrea who described how she fled her homeland, escaping with bullets fired over her head. I still remember her well. I remember my shock and also remember her courage. My realization of how much each day lasts with many Those who turn a blind eye, however, despite all odds, she, like many, still perseveres.
“I followed that trip to join a delegation in 2016 in Ottawa. I was very fortunate to receive a day off from filming specifically to take a quick flight from Toronto to Ottawa and to be able to join that business again at One Young World, being with some of the people who I liked them a lot, including the former President of Ireland Mary Robinson. I joined you in London in 2019 and by that point it is fair to say that my life has changed quite dramatically. I was now married and now a mother.”
At this point, there was cheers from the audience, before Meghan continued.
She said, “My view of the world has expanded greatly, and I see the global community through my child’s eyes and I would like to ask, What is this world that will come to embrace it? And what can we do, and what can I do to improve it??”
“I’m glad my husband is able to join me here this time…”
“To be able to see, respect and witness firsthand and all that it has to offer as well as its accomplishments. One Young World was an integral part of my life for many years before I met him until I meet him again here, on UK soil, by my side, make every Something looks like a full circle.
“And as a sidebar, earlier this afternoon we sat down with a few delegates and it was incredibly inspiring, the bustling topics that came up. About representation, inclusion, access, and trying to change the global perspective of all of us as a global community of one of the curiosity of criticism.
“My husband has always championed important and necessary influence in the world, focusing so much of his life’s work on youth. So, for us, we testify to the strength you have in your hands and the enthusiasm and unbridled energy that you have to see things pay off – it is just an absolute privilege. I feel With great humility not only to stand before each of you, but to stand by your side.
“We often hear people say it’s time now, but I’ll double that, saying your time is now. Important work can’t wait for tomorrow.
“And this week, the world watches as you cement your place in history by displaying the good you do today in the present as we embrace the moment now to create a better tomorrow.”
