Serena Williams has always had a talent for drama.
Now, with her tennis career winding down – Williams announced her intention earlier this month to suspend her racket after the 2022 US Open – the question is: Can she do it again?
Williams has not won a major tournament since 2017 when she won the Australian Open. It’s been even longer since she last won the US Open – and last lifted the Silver Cup in 2014.
Perhaps winning the jackpot is a distant dream. But for Williams, perhaps the greatest tennis player ever, the opportunity to leave an indelible mark on the court where she was so dominant is tempting.

Williams won her first major title at the US Open. It was 1999 and Williams was just a teenager, unaware of how much success she would achieve over the course of her career. It straddled the green and blue pavement as its iconic white beads swirled in the autumn air.
Now, she is 40 years old. And while the sport has waned, Williams’ desire for “the moment” has not. With a first-round encounter against Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic on the agenda, that’s a real force, especially as Williams looks to leave positive memories for fans from her last major competition.
